SCULPTURES
Pompoen works in Sutherland’s beverage store, and spends his leisure-time drawing. From his sketches, he creates sculptures made of wire. While favorably he works from pictures of cars (Lamborghini being the favorite),the shape of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), which is the largest research telescope here at the observatory, inspired him to do a sculpture. The piece is about 5 feet tall and includes interiors like the mirror. He sold it to the observatory, where it is now part of the permanent exhibition at the Visitor Centre.
